Malaysia Today reported the news on Abdul Taib Mahmud's timber export kickbacks on April 7 2007, which was actually captured from an earlier report from Japan Times on March 19 2007. The reported kickbacks was RM32 million.
Of course, the Sarawak Chief Minister reacted angrily and sued everyone on the news "value chain" including MalaysiaKini, Utusan Malaysia, Seapa (South East Asia Press Alliance), two PKR's (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) senior official in Kuching, and is now looking very likely to file a suit against the Japan Times. To say that Taib Mahmud is ticked off, is to put it mildly.
These "kickbacks" or "rebates" by the way was uncovered by the Japan tax authorities. Just to be clear. Our ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency) reportedly has begun its investigation on this scandal (yeah right).
Taib Mahmud, we all know that you are corrupted. Why do you think Miri has a trunk road which their people refer to as a "highway"? (Perhaps that's the best road available??). Why does Sarawak have the most number of people living in remote areas? Because they have the largest remote areas? (naa...that's just looking for the easiest answer). I can (if I want to) post a lot (a lot) more questions for you to ponder upon, that would make you believe (or at least wonder) that Taib Mahmud has done nothing but collecting personal wealth from the resources of Sarawak. By personal, I meant himself and his legacy. Why do you think he has no intent of relinquishing his Chief Minister post? He has served at the helm much longer than Mahathir did. I can bet you that Mahathir is nowhere near Taib Mahmud, in terms of wealth of course (perhaps in terms of intelligence as well, but in this case, Taib Mahmud's the ones trailing).
Sarawakian is a bunch of contented people. They have been independent (from the British occupation) for so long, yet they have never quibbled about the lack of advancemence in the natural resources-rich state, nor have they questioned the wealth of their Chief Minister (who is by right, part of a government setup, working on a fixed salary). Every election, Barisan Nasional in Sarawak wins 100% of the seats contested (except for recently when they lost 2 seats, I believe. Finally!!!).
The question is, how much longer should we (I'm talking about you too Pak Lah) let this billionaire rule this rich-minister-poor-people state and run it out of its natural resources? Taib Mahmud has thought about his legacy/generation. What about you Sarawakian? Have you?
